Some quick recommendation:

Astonishing Xmen Xenogenesis #1 by Warren Ellis and Karee Andrews:
This books is amazing, the art it's stunning and at the end you can see the script and realize that half the things in the page are just out of Kareen's imagination and are not in the script at all, I think the genius of Warren Ellis is to be able to choose great artists.

Justified (FX Network) if you are a fan of good things in general watch this show is like a 13 hour long Cohen Brothers movie full of great dialog, interesting quirky characters and a long overarching story that makes it all worth watching, they even have a character that you can see Steve Buchemi playing but they kill him right away. It's based on a book so I suspect all the good bits of dialog are from there. Hollywood pitch: The Wire meets Gunsmoke!

Obama's Plans For NASA: Mars By 2030, $6 Billion Budget Increase Today - Nasa - io9

Earlier today, President Obama spoke at the Kennedy Space Center, outlining the future of the US space program, including a $6 billion budget increase and plans to go to Mars. Here are highlights from his speech.

Constellation program definitely canceled

The President's speech focused on restating his position that the United States would not fall behind other nations, and that new initiatives would help to strengthen and reorganize NASA with a set of new goals, objectives and achievements that would keep the U.S. at the forefront. According to the President, he is 100% behind NASA and its future. In his administration's views, this is best done by reexamining the environment in which NASA operates, as well as the specific challenges that the agency faces. The loss of the shuttle, competition from other nations, US assistance with the ISS and the current economy are all contributing factors, and with that in mind, several changes were in order.

He spoke about the canceled Constellation "humans on the Moon" program, noting that independent committees found that the project was far over budget and behind schedule, and that its continuation would cut deeply into spending for other initiatives, hurting the space program overall. While the future of spaceflight and the U.S.'s future in spaceflight is in question even beyond the Constellation program, his speech did go towards looking at how the US should proceed.

Despite speculation, there was no indication that the Administration is moving to reimplement specific elements of the Constellation program. NASA will, however, continue to operate the Orion capsule as an escape vehicle.

A heavy lift rocket for 2015, plus research funds

Obama did announce that the U.S would begin designs for a heavy-lift rocket that we would begin building by 2015 - two years in advance of what had been planned for Constellation - which would be used for deep space exploration and travel beyond the moon. Obama specifically noted that NASA would revise older models. (This could mean that the Ares-1 rocket would be used in part for these plans.) Also in the plans for the future are major new initiatives for research into new means of propulsion, ships for longer trips, as well as investments to support such programs, with the eye towards adding new jobs to the Florida area. (The president promised 40 million dollars in economic development money for Florida to offset job loss from the Space Shuttle program shutdown.)

Shooting for Mars and the Asteroid Belt

Obama also set out several goals for these programs, bypassing the Moon and saying that he wanted to send astronauts to asteroids for the first time, and by 2030, to Mars itself. While his speech didn't resonate as President Kennedy's 1961 speech before a joint session of Congress, it did set forth a very ambitious agenda, one that will likely become the cornerstone of future space ambitions: the U.S. will look beyond past achievements, and look towards building upon its accomplishments of the past by looking to other planets, scientific endeavors and technology to remain ahead of the rest of the planet.

He also refuted the criticism that the using private contractors as a major component of U.S. space ambitions would weaken the country's lead in space, noting that private industry has always had a major part in NASA's history, as far back as the Mercury program that launched the first people into space.

One of the main points that he also addressed was looking to implement a strategy for NASA, one that has long-term ambitions towards remaining in space - the aforementioned trips to asteroids, Mars, and no matter what he says, a return to the Moon. The recognition of the strategies that worked for the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs is a good one, as well as the recognition that technology needs to be invented, tested and put into place as part of a larger plan. Obama, despite criticism to the contrary, seems to have ambitions to keep the United States in the forefront of reaching orbit.

Short term goals

While he outlined some fairly impressive goals, he left unspoken the short term goals for NASA reaching space, particularly when the Space Shuttle would be decommissioned (a decision, he noted, that was made 6 years ago, not 6 months ago), and when US astronauts would be put into orbit. Currently, the plan will be to pay other countries to bring astronauts into space, which seems to be the major point of concern for most following the issue. The President did note in passing the Falcon 9 rocket, built by Elon Musk's SpaceX company, which could potentially help in the short term. He did speak to major new projects to be funded to develop a plan for the Florida region to help spur growth of a space transit industry, something that he gave a concrete date for: August 15th. The intent here is to help spur the growth of the supporting industry for some of these major plans for the upcoming future.

Obama noted that his new budget for NASA would create 2500 new jobs, and "potentially 10 thousand more jobs across the country."

The President signed off by noting that he wanted to see the advances in space become something greater than the achievements of the Apollo program, something that will use Apollo as a stepping off point: "I chose to believe that is the beginning."

New satellite images of Mars may challenge the theory that the planet was too cold to sustain water on the surface, suggesting instead the existence of 20km-wide lakes along the planet's equator. But what does this mean for Martian history?
A research team led by Dr Nicholas Warner from Imperial College London (University College London also participated) analyzed images sent back from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and believe that they've found evidence of lakes from a period previously believed to be full of subzero nothingness, as Warner explains:

Most of the research on Mars has focussed on its early history and the recent past. Scientists had largely overlooked the Hesperian Epoch as it was thought that Mars was then a frozen wasteland. Excitingly, our study now shows that this middle period in Mars' history was much more dynamic than we previously thought.

The team reached its conclusions by comparing images of depressions on the surface of Mars with landscapes from Alaska and Siberia, leading them to believe that - despite previous theories to the contrary - the Mars of three billion years ago must have included running water on its surface. If true, then this could offer new areas of exploration for those looking for evidence of life on Mars, as the lake beds would have been potential habitats for microbial lifeforms. Alternatively, it might be evidence that we should start preparing Adelaide Brooke for a space mission forty-nine years from now.

A review... it has been a while since I actually sit down to write a movie review so apologies if I am a little rusty. First the "elephant" on the room, why bias? Well James Cameron stole my idea, wait I know what you are thinking I don't mean to say that him or one of his minions were spying in my window when I designed Nhulluz nor that he saw my character designs online and thought: wow if I put half a billion dollars into this it may pay off! What I mean is that he probably reached on that collective consciousness soup that we all share and fished it out with a rusty spoon. In any case if reports of him being working on this are true I probably stole it from him, the point is he did the movie first and I did the comic (The Caerulean Dream) before his movie was out so we are even right? So I will address what is similar and what is different in between so bare with me if you don't care.

The Review, spoilers wise if you haven't seen the movie go see it and then come read the review I am not going to hold back on juicy details I think there is enough out there so you can make a decision on to see or not to see on you own, when in doubt: "eyeball it".

This is a great movie, Cameron's first accomplishment is burring the mystical "Uncanny Valley" there is no such a thing in this film, every CGI character is full of life and personality if you just wake up from a comma and were no up to date on FX you will think they are real aliens. The 3D is gorgeous, I felt with other movies that it was only a two dimensional separation between foreground and backgrounds there is very little of that in here, to the point that you forget you are watching a 3D movie and you are just seeing that world. Characters Design wise here is were most of the overlap with The Caeruleas is first, you guessed it thy are blue but, they are also: tall, slender, agile, they have big round eyes, hair looks kind of like dreadlocks (they are really not), flat noses, long fingers, ear shape, etc. Differences: my characters have 5 fingers with two thumbs on each hand, they don't have feline eyes they are more like goat eyes, their mouths are bigger with complex jaws, their hair is not really hair but this thick chunks that grow out of their scalps, their body type varies a little more than the Na'vi, also all their joints are bendable in 360 degrees make them excellent climbers and jumpers in a way that is very different to humans. In other character designs notes I find it odd that all the animals in this world are constructed in a very different way, with four front legs but the Na'vi are not, I think the main reason for this is practical as an avatar how can a human control four arms? Having said all this the designs are outstanding, they convey their personalities their faces are different enough from each other that you can recognize them (most of the time), you can see how a human could trade with out blinking.The flora and fauna are very interesting, you can see were the base animals came from but they are not oversize versions of them, I really like the land sea-horse, the flora is probably nicer looking and more diverse than the fauna but more familiar to us too. The flying creatures shape was very similar to the ones in Starship Troopers but different enough up close. The world itself is outstanding, great balance and landscapes, this is another similarity with The Caeruleans their world is a low gravity moon in a gas giant system. I was expecting a little more variety on the other tribes habitat but there was not much time to explore it.

Plot wise I found it the weakest point of the movie, I will skip the comparisons with Dances with the Wolves, The Last Samurai and District 9 but there is plenty. Even when trying to show a point of view different from their own I think american directors can not stop themselves from putting the all american boy in the middle, it is being self center when you have to be both the hero and the villain? or just narcissistic? A good way of putting the lack of originality on the story is to say that is a mix of Battlestar Galactica and Princes Mononoke. I think the biggest challenge when creating an Alien spices is how to handle it, do you base it on a long lost culture, do you just go east or you skip the creative process on based on you own? It's hard the risk you take when you base it on a lost or heavily genocided culture is to make a mockery of their belief system in this case being: so the Na'vi are similar to the native Americans but all their "crap" about being connected to their land is true. Please don't quote me on that with out a context. I guess the Na'vi are more spiritual than The Caeruleans but they share the reverence for balance and nature in The Caeruleans is based on practicalities of survival something we could learn from. The acting is the other bright start in this movie, it's what helps smash the uncanny valley and bring the story together, the way they talk, body language and guttural reactions give them a personality package that is not rooted on language or references but in the gut reactions that we all feel making it different from ours but still keeping us connected to it. I smell an Oscar or too... oh wait that is just my feet. I hope Cameron makes a bunch of this movies and leaves the humans out of a couple of them, you really don't need them. And when the Holo-decks becomes a reality I know this will be their Minesweeper. Awesome movie in the near future when I get around to make a proper Caerulean Movie I may consider hiring the young Jimmy Cameron to do some doodles for me he seems to know what he is doing, go see it so he can keep making his movies till then and thanks for reading my ramblings let me know if you have an opinion.

Russia Wants Nuclear-Powered Rocket to Go to Mars [Space]

The space race is on again: The Russians are planning a nuclear-powered spacecraft that will get them to Mars faster than Duck Dodgers in the 24 and a half century. Space Agency chief Anatoly Perminov promises a design by 2012:

The project is aimed at implementing large-scale space exploration programs, including a manned mission to Mars, interplanetary travel, the creation and operation of planetary outposts. The implementation of this project will allow us to reach a new technological level surpassing foreign developments.

It would only take nine years to fully develop at the tune of $600 million, which is spare change compared to all the economy stimulus plans in place. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev—knowing that this will generate money and specialized jobs, not to mention pushing Russia to a new scientific and engineering level—has backed the project and wants the government to pay for it.
Meanwhile, the Guys With the Right Stuff are seeing their projects scrapped, with Constellation about to get cancelled, and the shuttle getting killed. Godspeed America, godspeed. Let's go to KFC and sink our hope in greasy chicken and cheap beer. [Yahoo via Universe Today]

Let's hope this remake is as good as the new Star Trek.

Confirmation Of Underground Caves On The Moon [Lunar Colony]

New satellite photos have revealed what scientists have long suspected: There are large tunnels made from lava running beneath the Moon's surface. These caves could provide shelter from radiation for future lunar settlers. Or they might already be occupied!
Observers of the Moon's surface have seen "sinuous rilles," or long, winding depressions on its surface that suggest the presence of underground tunnels. Such tunnels would be formed when lava rips through an underground area, then drains away, leaving a long tube behind. (Such structures exist on Earth, too.) At last, a satellite captured solid evidence for these tunnels when it snapped this picture of a massive hole in the Moon's surface.
The hole is actually what's called a "skylight," or a rift in the top of an ancient lava tunnel. According to New Scientist:

The team found the first candidate skylight in a volcanic area on the moon's near side called Marius Hills. "This is the first time that anybody's actually identified a skylight in a possible lava tube" on the moon, [researcher Carolyn] van der Bogert, who helped analyse the feature, told New Scientist.
The hole measures 65 metres across, and based on images taken at a variety of sun angles, the the hole is thought to extend down at least 80 metres. It sits in the middle of a rille, suggesting the hole leads into a lava tube as wide as 370 metres across.
It is not clear exactly how the hole formed. A meteorite impact, moonquakes, or pressure created by gravitational tugs from the Earth could be to blame. Alternatively, part of the lava tube's ceiling could have been pulled off as lava in the tube drained away billions of years ago.

We may not be able to explore this tube any time soon, however. Like lava tubes on Earth, it's possible that this tunnel is filled with debris and would require excavation to unblock.
What's important, however, is that we now have solid evidence that lava tubes exist beneath the Moon's surface, which means Moon real estate just got a little more appealing. Unless, of course, Moon natives already live there.

Battlestar Galactica Movie Reveals The Cylons Never Actually Had A Plan [Mov...

Battlestar Galactica DVD movie "The Plan," coming out Tuesday, tells the Cylons' side of the story. It's about why they attacked the colonies, and what they wanted from humanity. But watching it will leave you with more questions than answers.
There are moments of coolness in this movie for fans, especially those of us who wanted to know more about little-used cylons like the Simon model. We get genuine character development for Simon, as well as a few versions of Cavil and sleeper agent Sharon. Writer Jane Espenson isn't always in her element with Battlestar, but she knows how to write snappy dialogue that Dean Stockwell delivers with pitch-perfect evil prissiness. (There is a great moment where Cavil snarks at a Five model for being too blendy with his fellow models by wearing the same suits, and the Five snaps, "But his jacket was burgundy. This is teal.") We also meet a hooker version of Six who is hilariously awesome.
However, I have to emphasize what I said above: This movie is only going to be cool for fans. Nobody else could possibly understand it - the story jumps around in time throughout the first and second seasons, referencing plot developments that will make no sense to anybody but a die-hard follower of the show. But fans will also quickly become impatient with the story, too. Larded with lots of old footage, "The Plan" often feels like a gussied-up clip show.
A lot of the details that are added in actually make the show even more confusing. For example, a Cavil hanging out with the rebels back on Caprica has a conversation with a Simon model that makes it seem as if both of them know that Anders is one of the final five. Which makes no sense because one of the major issues in the show was that only Cavil knew who the final five were.
We also discover that the Cylons never really had a "plan" at all - basically, Cavil just bamboozled the other models into attacking the colonies for "justice." But what he really wanted was for the final five to be killed in the attacks, and then wake up in their goo buckets having "learned a lesson" that humanity is horrible. Somehow, he thinks that just having lived among humans will have convinced the final five that humans are awful. Then they'll all apologize to him and he'll get a lot of damp hugs from his naked, gooey parents.
Unfortunately, however, the Plan goes awry because none of the final five are killed in the attacks. Plus, they haven't learned anything! They still think humans are cool. Although Ellen is on the verge of death, Cavil decides to keep her alive so that she'll eventually learn her lesson that humans suck.

Could this really have been the whole Plan? Nuke the entire human race so that the final five will resurrect and give out apologetic hugs? I feel like I need another movie just to explain what happened in this one.
However, I don't want you to think that it was all bad, because there were parts of The Plan that reminded me of what made BSG such a great show. One of the Simon models in the Fleet is given a great backstory. He's gone native, married a human, and adopted her child from a previous marriage. His wife, who works with the Chief in engineering, is a strong, interesting character - a woman who once had a job doing aerospace engineering at a top company, who now has to figure out how to make the Galactica's jalopy fighter ships run without any spare parts at all. As Cavil pushes Simon to destroy the ship where he lives, we see the Cylon torn between the family he loves and the Cylons who are his people. It's a great subplot, and could easily have been an episode during the first or second season.
Developments with Cavil's character are also pretty interesting. We see that there are two versions of Cavil who emerge after the colonies are destroyed: one who is the evil Brother we all love, and one who starts to sympathize with the humans.
In fact, the theme of "The Plan," if anything, is that the Cylon's sympathies were always divided. From the beginning, they were torn between love for humanity and rage that they had been enslaved by the creatures who created them. Even Cavil, who is revealed in this movie as pretty much the only reason the Cylons attacked the colonies, is divided in his loyalties. One of the strengths of BSG as a series was that its heroes were dark, and its villains were granted an unexpected goodness. While it doesn't exactly deepen this theme, "The Plan" certainly sticks with it.
I think "The Plan" is destined to be the kind of thing that nobody but BSG completists will want to own. It won't bring new people into the series, and even those who love the series may be disappointed. Though there are standout moments, "The Plan" essentially takes the sensibilities of the final, extremely uneven season of the show and overlays them on the events of seasons 1 and 2. That's something that most of us, especially diehard fans, didn't really want to see.
"The Plan" will be available in stores on Oct. 27.

Sarah Connor Chronicles Season 2 Plays Like A Novel [DVD Review]

We didn't really know what we had in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles until it was cancelled — just as an apocalypse makes you realize what a fantastic world we've lost. Luckily, the season-two DVDs give you one more chance.
(Sorry, I know this DVD box set came out a couple weeks ago — I didn't get a chance to sit down and look through it until this week, for reasons too complicated to go into.)
Watching the second season of Sarah Connor Chronicles in one go, you really get way more of a sense of how cohesive and powerful this story actually is. Watching it in weekly installments, the show often felt frustratingly uneven, until its final six-episode burst of genius. But when you sit down and watch four or five episodes in a row, a lot of the episode-to-episode flaws fade away, to be replaced by a much stronger sense of character development, and a really clear narrative arc. The awesome ass-kicking moments also just keep coming.
In particular, when you watch the whole thing in one go, you realize it really is about Cameron, the Terminator played by Summer Glau, and what happens when she goes bad. In the season opener, a car bomb damages Cameron's chip and she reverts to her original programming — to kill John Connor. Instead of shutting her down, John Connor decides to try and repair her, and take a chance that she'll work properly again. (Is this partly because she tells him she loves him? We'll never know.) And at the end of the episode, Cameron tells John that he made the wrong choice, and this decision has changed everything — people are going to be upset that John spared Cameron's life. John thinks that Cameron means his mom and uncle, but she says that's not whom she means.

And then in the very next episode, we meet Riley, the chirpy blonde chick who cozies up to John — and it turns out she's one of the people who were indirectly affected by John's decision to spare his Terminator friend. It's a lot clearer, watching the season in a few sittings, that when John makes that choice, he's changing the future — and bringing it a lot closer to the future we see in the nuclear submarine flashforwards, where John Connor is a ghostly presence that nobody ever sees — he only speaks through his Terminator companion, Cameron. That future drives Jesse Flores to go back in time and bring Riley, to seduce John and then become a victim of his jealous Terminator, to drive John away from Cameron — basically, to unmake John's decision to let Cameron go on functioning.
A lot of the episodes, one way or another, deal with whether Cameron can be trusted, including the one where she "reverts" to the original human she was based on, and the one where we start wondering just what she's been doing at night while everyone sleeps.
I also gained a slightly better impression of Thomas Dekker's acting as John Connor — he really does grow as a character throughout the season, becoming tougher and more like a leader, even as he's more and more compromised by his dependence on Cameron. Dekker is probably my least favorite actor in the series, but he does manage to sell Connor's transformation way better than I'd remembered, and his scenes in "Today Is The Day, Parts 1 & 2" are pretty heart-stopping.

And of course, the other great story strand in season two is the artificial intelligence that Sarah Connor thinks is destined to become Skynet, but which we discover is actually a separate A.I., called John Henry. While the Connor clan struggle with just how much they should depend on Cameron — and by extension, how much people can rely on machines in general — a machine super-intelligence has been gestating, learning to play with action figures and hashing out the tricky details of human ethics and morality. Every time Garret Dillahunt, as John Henry, and Richard T. Jones, as Ellison, are on screen together, it's just fantastic to watch.
It's too bad those two strands only come together in the very last episode, and we only really glimpse how John's Cameron issues and Ellison's John Henry issues intersect. It's just enough to make you wonder how great a third season could have been.
But all in all, the season feels much more satisfying when you view it as one novel with individual chapters (despite the occasionally clunky episodic bits), and when viewed as a novel, it does reach a conclusion that stays with you. John's been wondering about the future world all this time, and now he's stuck there. He has tangly emotional ties with Cameron, and now he's meeting her human version. And John Henry is finally going to see for himself a world built by another A.I.

Not every storyline flows perfectly, though — the business with the dying man from the future writing all over the wall in blood still feels a bit contrived and random, and the "three dots" that he leaves behind never quite gel as a plot device.
On the other hand, in case you ever forget how lucky you are to be watching this version of Terminator, each disc begins with a trailer for Terminator Salvation, to make you give thanks all over again.

The special features are pretty much a Summer Glau fan's dream — if you're one of the people who thinks Glau can beat Darth Vader and Galactus with one hand tied behind her back, then you owe it to yourself to get these DVDs. The first disc has a great feature on storyboards for the big "Cameron goes bad" sequence that include lots of great pulpy drawings of Glau looking evil and menacing — suitable for framing! I like the way they compare the original storyboards with the final filmed version:

And then, the second disc has a great featurette showing rehearsal footage from the big fight between Cameron and Rosie the contortionist Terminator (the big elevator fight sequence). You get to see Glau in a T-shirt and sweatpants, running through this incredibly complicated fight choreography in real time — I knew she'd been a ballet dancer, but this definitely gave me a new appreciation for how limber and dancerly she really is. Plus you get to hear the second-unit director telling the actors, "You can kick and Summer just grabs it — and choke her with her own leg!" And you watch Summer do just that.

The best featurette is probably the "Writing The Future" documentary, which lets you inside the writers' room, giving you glimpses of the whiteboards on which the writers sketch out the show's future direction:

And there's a great bit where we see Creator Josh Friedman saying that we already "know" the Turk (which becomes John Henry) is Skynet and we're just waiting for it to wake up and become evil — and the implication is that Friedman is about to suggest that the writers should subvert that premise, and make The Turk not turn out to be Skynet after all. You also see some great discussion happening about just how much Cameron is evolving — is she having an emotional awakening, or just pretending? How much is she programmed to pretend to evolve as a human, and to make John love her?
And then there are these fascinating glimpses of directions the show didn't actually end up going:

There are also some great design featurettes, including one about the making of iconic sequences like the urinal-becomes-Catherine-Weaver sequence. You also get some lovely behind the scenes glimpses of Rob Hall's distressed Terminator-face makeup and the endoskeleton action, and then all of the show's surprisingly ambitious sets, including the submarine and the horrible future world.
Not all of the special features are that great — the deleted scenes are mostly pretty disposable. There's one scene which seems to exist purely to allow Derek Reese to namecheck the family's black Dodge truck — just an extra bit of product placement for the show's main sponsor.The "gag reel" is also pretty meh.
But generally, this box set will really make you see Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles in a whole new light — even if you've already watched every episode. And if you've been on the fence about joining Sarah Connor's army, and you're still not sure what the fuss is about, this is your best chance to discover it for yourself. Not to mention, with Christmas coming up, it makes for a tight present.

People sometimes ask me why I dislike Microsoft. The answer is simple: I don’t — I’ve just been disappointed with much of what it’s done in the past decade.

But over the past 10 years, I’ve slowly transitioned away from almost everything made by the company. It’s not what I set out to do, it just happened because better products came along — products not made by Microsoft. And it’s frustrating, because with billions of dollars spent each year in research and development, it’s not like the company doesn’t have the means to innovate and make great products. So what does it lack? The vision? Well, if the video below is any indication, no. This video is a clip from a presentation given yesterday by Microsoft’s Business Division president Stephen Elop at the Wharton Business Technology Conference. It shows what Microsoft thinks the world may look like a decade from now, in 2019. (There’s a longer, five-minute version of the video on the blog istartedsomething.com.) While clearly all of the products in this video are very much concepts, they show a Microsoft that seems to have a vision for the next decade. Carrying out that vision will be a whole other matter, of course, and so Microsoft needs to focus. And it needs to realize quickly that focus doesn’t include wasting huge amounts of time and money on fights it will never win. Fights like the ones it’s bogged down in with Google for Internet search and advertising, and with Apple in portable media players.
Products like its Surface computer show that Microsoft has the potential to fulfill the promises made by the video above. And if it does that, I’ll have no problem once again using Microsoft products in my life. I’ve said it about Apple before, and the same applies to Microsoft: It’s not about the company, it’s about the product.

Why Isn't Terminator The New Lost?

Watching last night's episode of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, I couldn't help wondering why this show hasn't become the new Lost, with a cult following and 12 million viewers. The Terminator show deserves it: last night's episode wasn't the best of the season, by a long chalk, but it was thrilling and disturbing, and it raised questions I was thinking about all day today. Oh, and there are spoilers.

In last night's episode, there were three main plot strands. The two minor ones: the body of the dead Terminator has gone missing and John Connor and his pet Terminator are searching for it, and Sarah Connor is having crazy dreams. And then the major one: Jesse (BSG's Stephanie Jacobsen) has found Charlie Fisher, the guy who collaborated with the machines and tortured people in the future.

The two minor plotlines were so-so — the best part about them was the business with the turtles. Sarah faces the Blade Runner test — she sees a turtle on its back — and she passes with flying colors. Summer doesn't quite understand why you'd bother, and thus she beats the crap out of former FBI Agent Ellison. Meanwhile, Sarah is having weird surreal dreams about turtles and motherhood and wearing a weird prairie dress, and she has an unhelpful session with Skynet's therapist.

But the major plotline was pure win, as you can see from that clip above. Jesse needs to prove to Derek that she's really captured a Skynet collaborator from the future, and hasn't just kidnapped some random innocent guy. So she finds the present-day Charlie Fisher, a young, callow guy who used to be Warren on Buffy. The scene where the old Charlie tells the young Charlie he has no clue who he is utterly rules.

And then the final twist opens a whole can of worms that adds whole layers to every part of the show: In Jesse's version of the future, Derek was tortured and broken down mercilessly by Charlie. But Derek doesn't remember these events, because he comes from a different version of the future. The only possible explanation: Derek has changed the future since he came back in time, but not necessarily for the better. Between the time Derek traveled back and the time Jesse came back to join him, he's changed things enough that Skynet's empire of torture has gotten big and powerful enough to ensnare Derek. Both Charlie and Jesse "remember" this same future, because they both came back more recently than Derek.

What's the change that Derek made, that led to him later being captured and tortured? Was it the nuclear power plant he inadvertantly handed over to Skynet? Or something else?

This kind of multi-layered playing with the timeline reminds me of Lost at its best, especially episodes like "The Constant." The characters are becoming rich enough, the mythology dense enough, to justify the kind of mass devotion that Lost inspires too. So why is the Terminator show still struggling with around 5.3 million viewers, below even Chuck?

Off the top of my head, a few ideas, with particular reference to last night's episode.

1) People think they know what it's about, because it's based on a movie franchise. There are plenty of mysteries, but we know how it ends: Judgment Day.

2) Not enough alpha males. Look at last night's episode: three storylines, each featuring a strong woman waving a gun. (Even the feverish Sarah brandished a gun a few times.) In all three storylines, a male character is trying to restrain or understand the woman. By contrast, Lost is chock full 'o' alpha males, who come into conflict with each other.

3) No shippers. There's nobody to ship on this show. Last night's episode didn't even include John's love interest Riley (yay), and Jesse and Derek are an established couple. (With trouble on the horizon, I'm betting.) There are no love triangles, no frustrated lovers. I would like to see a Sarah-Charley Dixon-Agent Ellison triangle, but it's apparently not happening.

4) It's too science fictional. Lost producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof said in a recent interview that their show had been disguised as a regular drama, and then sneaked in scifi ideas over time. Terminator couldn't do that. And last night's episode used time travel in a very different way than "The Constant." Both episodes were great, but "The Constant" was more emotional and relatable, less bleak and tied up with the theory of time travel.

5) It doesn't have as many compelling minor characters. Last night's episode basically featured our leads, plus the two Charlie Fishers and the shrink who doesn't want to be called a shrink. I doubt we'll be seeing Charlie Fisher again, but I do hope we get more insight into the shrink, who's a promising character. Weirdly, for such an epic show, it's much smaller and more intimate than Lost, which has a huge cast.

That's what I can think of off the top of my head. I might do a larger post on that topic at some point, although I'm sure it's a bit of an apples/oranges comparison. In any case, the main thing Lost and T:SCC have in common is that they've both grown on me a lot lately. I liked Sarah Connor's first season, and it had a few really strong episodes, but it's taken off in its second season. Too bad the ratings haven't followed.

Minor observations:

Did Joss Whedon direct this episode? There was a big moment revolving around Summer Glau's feet.

Also, Cameron likes crappy pop music.

This episode made me crave bad food court Chinese food. And cheeseburgers.

Brian Austin Green, still most valuable player.

Who photoshopped that weird picture of Sarah and a dog?

Did older Charles Fisher cause younger Charles Fisher to get sent to prison? I don't really like that kind of circular time-travel logic, but I'll give it a pass.

I just finish reading this Crime Pulp, thanks to the book reviews and Interviews from Criminal (Ed Brubaker's Crime Noir comics series) I have been looking for the little pulps in used books stores. This, I was pleased to find out, is one in a series of books starring private detective Pete McGrath. It was pretty refreshing to get to the last chapter of this book having no idea of the way it was going to resolve itself out, sans an "out of the hat" plot twist. On top of the great story and characters, this books offer a nice style of covers of which information is less than scarce. In this case it seems to be a heavy filtered photograph (illustrations or paintings are more common place) very softly illuminated and composed with a lovely selection of colors, type is very basic and not too carefully chosen, placing however respects the art and serves it purpose. The inside of the book jumps right into the middle of the action with the first page, a sample of a tense moment in the story accompanied by the title gives way to the usual intro pages and then to the yellowed filled and red edged pages of this very recommendable story.

Heroes (Volume 3)

Last Night Heroes started his much delayed Volume 3, the two episodes were full of exposition in order to resume last Season events, and how the character got where they are now, like in our X-Men books it seems the writers decided to scrap some old plots and move forward with the next one. This could be excellent (if they pick them up later). We were introduced to the "villains" of season in the last 5 minutes and couple of reveals made the overall experience good but not great. Lets hope that now that the new status quo is established we can go ahead and have good stories. A pleasent surprice was the addition of Jamie Hector (Marlo Stanfield from the Wire) if he is half as creepy in this as he was in The Wire this season is going to be fun.

Anoche comenzo el muy demorado Volumen Numero 3, estos dos episodios estuvieron llenos de esposicion para explicar todo lo que paso en la temporada dos y como los personajes llegaron a donde estan ahora. Como en nuestro queridos comics de X-Men parece que los escritores decidieron desacerces de algunas historias viejas que estaban desarrollando, y seguir adelante con la nueva historia. Esto puede ser muy bueno (siempre y cuando lo retomen en el futuro). Nos introdujeron a los "Villanos" de esta temporada en los ultimos 5 munutos y trancurrieron un par de revelaciones interesante que hicieron la experienciaa completa buena pero no Excelente . Esperemos que ahora que todo el "texto" explicativo esta fuera de el camino podamos disfrutar de buenas historias. Una sorpresa agradable fue la suma a el elenco de Jamie Hector (que fue Marlo Stanfield en the Wire) si es la mitad de salado en esto de lo que fue en The Wire esta temporada va a estar buena.

Yo la vi ayer en IMAX (estuvieron buenas las escenas de alta alta.. alta definicion pero no se si valio la pena el viaje en tren y las horas de espera) La pelicula es sin duda la mejor de Batman de todos los tiempos El Joker me hizo pensar que si Jack Nickolson ubiera actuado esa parte despues de The Shining ubiera sido muy parecido a lo Ledger hizo (Traduccion Ledger es tan bueno como Nickolson era cuando era bueno). Pequeños tesoros de Fan joy desparramados durante las dos horas y pico, referencias a la serie animada de los 90 y el Mejor Dos-Caras la hacen muy pero muy disfrutable. Mas alla de ser una buena pelicula basada en comic books es terrible peliculon! se le podrian sacar las mascaras y los nombres coloridos y todavia seria una muy buena pelicula. Es ironico que V for Vendeta era sobre la anarquia en el comic pero no en la pelicula y ahora la pelicula de Batman es sobre anarkia. Exelente Film que no se puede perder.

Watchmen
Me convencio que mas alla de si sea o no una reencarnacio en celuloide de las palabras de Alan Moore y los dibujos de Gibbons va a valer la pena ir a verla. Y que DC se va a patiar las bolas por no haber hecho la Justigue League antes que Watchmen.

Devil May Care is the thirty-sixth James Bond novel. Written by Sebastian Faulks ("writing as Ian Fleming"), it was published on 28 May 2008, the 100th anniversary of Bond creator Ian Fleming's birth.[1][update needed]

The popular novelist, famous for Charlotte Gray and Birdsong, was selected by the estate of the late 007-author in 2006, though his identity was not revealed to the public until July 2007 when a publishing date for the work was officially announced along with its title.

The novel is set in the Cold War in 1967 (and in Ian Fleming's original continuity, following The Man With The Golden Gun) and the action is played out "across two continents, exotic locations and some of the world's most thrilling cities".[2] U.S. publisher Doubleday confirmed one of the locations will be Paris. [3]

Many online and print sources (for example, AOL Entertainment [4]) erroneously stated that Devil May Care will be the first new James Bond novel published since 1966. In fact, dozens of full-length Bond novels were published, officially, between 1968 and 2002 by the authors Kingsley Amis (as "Robert Markham"), John Pearson, Christopher Wood, John Gardner, and Raymond Benson. In addition, Charlie Higson and Samantha Weinberg (as "Kate Westbrook") have been publishing Bond-related novels since 2005. Faulks' book is, however, the first novel to focus on the adult James Bond, as conceived by Fleming, since 2002 and, as noted above, it takes place in the time-frame of Fleming's original novels, the first such book since Amis' Colonel Sun (discounting the spin-off Young Bond and The Moneypenny Diaries lines).

The jacket artwork features the model Tuuli Shipster, muse of the British photographer, Rankin. Tuuli said: "I was thrilled that Penguin chose me to be their Bond girl. It’s fantastic to be involved with something so iconic."[5] She was also involved in the book's launch on board HMS Exeter on 27 May 2008.[6]

The cover photograph was taken by British photographer and commercials director, Kevin Summers. The jacket image was created by the design agency The Partners.[5]

Devil May Care has been published in hardback by Penguin Books in the UK and its territories (Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India and Europe) and in Ireland. In the US it has been published by Doubleday. Many of the publishers will be using this jacket. Penguin are launching a brand new imprint – Penguin 007 – under which they will publish all their Bond titles, including Devil May Care.[5]

We’ve officially started principal photography on Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins. Like you guys, I’ve been a long-time fan of the series and I understand your passion for the Terminator movies -- and it’s my full intention to deliver a film that lives up to the previous three installments. I’ve spent time with James Cameron, spoken to Arnold Schwarzenegger, gone over the story with Jonah Nolan, and enlisted Stan Winston.

Everything we’re shooting is designed to be tactile and real, you’ll be seeing a whole set of inspired designs you’ve never seen before, and best of all you’ll finally get to see some of the post-judgment day future that was only hinted at in the previous movies.

John Connor will be pushed to the brink. And for me, Christian Bale embodies Connor’s strength and tenacity perfectly. And after visiting Sam Worthington on the set of Avatar, I know he’s perfect for his role.

As you know, Anton Yelchin is playing Kyle Reese, and his prep has been unbelievable. The guy's been watching all three Terminators incessantly and he’s definitely going to capture the essence of the character Michael Biehn created in Cameron’s first film.

We started principal photography with a sequence at Griffith Observatory. I've already seen a cut of it -- Anton and Sam are excellent. I’ll have more on that soon, and can’t wait to share some of what we’re doing with you all. Stay tuned for more.

The Future Begins has started production in the New Mexico desert, with Christian Bale and Sam Worthington on board to star in the film as John Connor and Marcus Wright, respectively. The movie website is currently a blank page, but there's a strong possibility it will launch sometime tomorrow. (So keep refreshing, fanboys!) Directed by McG, the man responsible for the cultural institution known as The O.C., Terminator Salvation will be set in 2018 where John Connor is fighting Skynet to ensure the future he's destined for.

However, a mysterious man by the name of Marcus Wright appears, and was not part of the prophecy known to Connor. As Connor figures out whether the amnesiac man came from the past or future, the two begin a quest to exterminate Skynet once and for all.

Lena Headey, who stars in the Fox SF drama pilot The Sarah Connor Chronicles, told SCI FI Wire that the show will begin with a confrontation between Headey's title character; her son, John Connor (Heroes' Thomas Dekker); and two new Terminators: a female model, played by Serenity's Summer Glau, and a male one, which she called Cromartie, played by Owain Yeoman. One is good and one is bad; she didn't say which is which. (Glau's character is named Cameron, an apparent nod to Terminator franchise creator James Cameron.)

The pilot, which picks up the story from the end of the feature film Terminator 2: Judgment Day, begins in the desert, and "it ends with them landing in L.A., having run and escaped. Or maybe not," Headey said in an interview at WonderCon in San Francisco on March 3.

"We just finished [shooting]," Headey (300) said. "We were in Albuquerque [N.M.] for a month. And it was very intense, because TV is crazy. I mean, it's long days. It's like boom, boom, boom. You don't get any respite. But ... I think it's going to be great. I don't know if its going to be picked up, because it's only in pilot stage right now. But I learned to shoot many weapons and how to recognize a Terminator. So it was a good experience."

The pilot "begins, and it's them basically running, hiding, trying to live," Headey said. "Trying to carve out a normal life for themselves, but always being watched and trying to locate Skynet, trying to stop [it]. But there are many, many issues in their way."

The first photo for the Sarah Connor Chronicles has popped online via a Foreign Fansite. Not terribly exciting but the first pic none the less. Besides starring in Frank Miller’s highly stylized and exciting new epic "300," Lena Headey is caught in a war that will come to television with FOX’s "The Sarah Connor Chronicles," the TV series spun from the "Terminator" mythology. There has been much speculation about when, where, and how the show would be starting. Though it’s been established that it would take place after "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," there’s still a lot of questions out there regarding the exact setup for the timeline and mythos.

Headey commented to Sci Fi Wire about the show’s general premise; "It's them basically running, hiding, trying to live. Trying to carve out a normal life for themselves, but always being watched and trying to locate Skynet, trying to stop [it]. But there are many, many issues in their way." She also said that they just finished filming; "We were in Albuquerque [N.M.] for a month. And it was very intense, because TV is crazy. I mean, it's long days. It's like boom, boom, boom. You don't get any respite. But ... I think it's going to be great. I don't know if its going to be picked up, because it's only in pilot stage right now." She says that, but with all the buzz around it, and the rise of "Terminator 4" talk, this series has a better shot than most with an established fanbase to stand on.

She also spoke a little about how exactly it will begin, attempting to clear up some of that mystery. Apparently, the pilot will begin with a confrontation of some kind between her character Sarah Connor, son and soon-to-be savior of mankind John Connor, and two new terminators; one male and one female. The male terminator will be played by Owain Yeoman of the failed series, "The Nine." The female will be named Cameron, which harkens to the "Terminator" origin, its writer/director/producer James Cameron, and may hint that this is the good terminator (though Headey did not specify which would be the villain), and she will be played by Summer Glau, star of the all too short-lived FOX series "Firefly" and the movie based on the cult sensation Joss Whedon series "Serenity."

There’s more than enough going on here to spark interest for a season at least, and if they do it right and stay true to elements that made "Terminator" a cult sci-fi/action classic, then fans could be able to enjoy elements such as the strong and toughened Sarah Connor and the future gone awry with one great chance for a hero story that twists in time-space continuum circles that sweep us up in the apocalyptic chaos, and all this on a weekly basis. Seriality is all the rage right now, and if they can make "Chronicles" something that sucks us in and keeps us coming back for more, then this could be the next great sci-fi show, but some might call that great expectations this early in the game.

Two local guys from Girona (a town near Campdevànol) Spain, have captured some footage of a strange 'creature' in the woods. They also found blood and some detached white wings (3m). They have been investigating paranormal activity in the area for quite a few months now and believe they have really discovered a non-human life-form. The footage is unbelievable.
